Experiment + field study Cause and effect
Money worries took up mental room, separately from stress
Among poorer participants, when thoughts about finances were prompted, cognitive performance dropped while better-off participants were unaffected, and the same farmers performed worse before harvest, when poor, than after it, as found using a laboratory experiment and a before-and-after field study.
Details
- Who was studied
- Poorer and better-off adults; farmers
- Observation window
- One session; before and after harvest
- What was measured
- Cognitive test performance
- What this establishes
- Cause and effect, in this setting
Limits: The farmers reported more stress before harvest, but the authors found stress did not account for the drop in performance.
What it does not show: This establishes that financial scarcity can reduce cognitive performance, but not that this happens through stress, or that it describes a stress personality.
Relationship to Calmistry
A reminder that some load is about circumstances, not response style. Financial pressure should be read as load, not as a trait of the person.
