Longitudinal diary Prediction
The problem ended yesterday. The emotion didn't.
Among 1,155 adults in a nationwide study, negative emotion that lingered the day after an ordinary stressor was associated with more chronic conditions and worse functional limitations about 10 years later, as found using an 8-day diary and a follow-up almost 10 years later.
Details
- Who was studied
- 1,155 adults
- Observation window
- 8 days + ~10-year follow-up
- What was measured
- Daily emotion and later physical health
- What this establishes
- Prediction, not causation
Limits: Observational; later health was self-reported.
What it does not show: This establishes that next-day lingering predicts later health, but not that lingering causes illness.
